Dana Spicer Company was founded in 1903 by William Dana and Charles Spicer. The company was originally known as the Dana Motor Carriage Company and started with the goal of creating motor vehicles for the farmers in the United States. Dana supplied farmers with vehicles that resulted in fewer truck deliveries and later became known as the "original equipment manufacturer" (OEM). The company's first motor vehicle, the four-wheeled Ford Model A, was released in 1908 and became a commercial success. In 1919, the company was renamed to Dana Motor Company and began working on their second vehicle, the Model T Ford. The Model T Ford was released in 1922 and had a range of 150 miles on a single tank of gas. In 1919, the company also began working on their first engine, which was released in 1922 after being developed by engineer Walter P. Chrysler.
