Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian-American cultural theorist, media critic, and philosopher, who coined the term "global village". His work has profoundly influenced the fields of communication studies, sociology, psychology and global cultural studies. McLuhan is sometimes considered to be one of the founders of media studies and one of the first scholars of popular culture. McLuhan believes that the world has become a global village as more and more people are connected through technology such as the telephone, television, and Internet. He also argues that the global village leads to a homogenization of culture. In his book, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, he talks about how the global village is changing the experience of culture in different parts of the world. He also describes how he believes humans are becoming more dependent on technology and losing aspects of their face-to-face interactions with other people.
