Orange Crush is a carbonated soft drink brand, originally created as an orange soda. PepsiCo acquired the brand in 1978 from the Crush brand's owner at the time, Cadbury Schweppes. The beverage was first invented and marketed in 1906 by beverage and flavoring syrup manufacturer Clayton J. Howell and his partner, Neil C. Ward. The product's name was inspired by a popular non-carbonated drink of the time, the Orange Crush. Howell and Ward partnered with beverage bottler Frank M. Taylor and incorporated the Orange Crush Bottling Company in Chicago in 1916. By 1921, Orange Crush was sold in all 48 states. The original formulation for Orange Crush included orange juice concentrate, sugar, citric acid, sodium benzoate, orange oil, and carbonated water. Some later variations included additional flavorings such as lemon, lime, and grapefruit. Today, Orange Crush is available in a variety of formulations, including regular, diet, and caffeine-free options. The drink is also available in a number of different sizes, from small cans to 2-liter bottles.
