This is one of the first (and still one of the few) comprehensive books about the Sikh religion in the English language. MacAuliffe had extensive access to manuscripts of the Sikh sacred writings (the Granth), as well as support from Sikh scholars and leaders of the time. This volume covers Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. This is volume one of six; future volumes are forthcoming. (Quote from sacred-texts.com) About the Author Max Arthur MacAuliffe (1842 - 1913) Michael MacAuliffe, also known as Max Arthur Macauliffe (10 September 1841 - 15 March 1913), was a senior British administrator, prolific scholar and author. Macauliffe is renowned for his translation into English of Sikh scripture and history MacAuliffe was born at Newcastle West, County Limerick, on 10 September 1841. He was educated at Newcastle School, Limerick, and Springfield College. He also served as Secretary of the college's Literary and Debating Society for the 1860-1861 session. MacAuliffe entered the Indian Civil Service in 1862, and arrived in the Punjab in February 1864. He was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Punjab in 1882, and a Divisional Judge in 1884. He retired from the Indian Civil Service in 1893. Good read but needs editing
The book content wise is very good and informational, but there needs some serious editing. It seems like when the company put it in book format, part of the print got screwed up, because I'll be reading and suddenly the paragraph ends mid-sentence and then we're onto another paragraph that doesn't correspond to where we left off. I am only about an eight of the way through the book and this has already happened several times. It's quite annoying. Also, the font they used is horrible (it's Calibri which no one I know likes), I wish they had used something more standard like Times New Roman, and used bigger font, because it is so tiny in the book.

Answered many questions
This book answered many questions about the Sikh Religion, it's origin, it's creator and first Guru, it's a good read and VERY complete.

I found the book incredibly boring and hard to stay interested in
Understanding that the original manuscript was written over a hundred years ago, I found the book incredibly boring and hard to stay interested in. Which is unfair to a beautiful religion.

Excellent book
I must say this book 'The Sikh religion'by Max Arthur Mccauliffe is a marvellous book. It arrived earlier then I had expected and immediately Idevelped an interest in reading it. It talks about how the Sikh religion is a misinterpreted and beautiful religion. There are also magnificent quotes throughout the book from the teachings of the 10 spiritual gurus of the Sikhs and from the holy scriptures the Guru Granth Sahib. I recommend this book to all those who have an interest in Sikhism, or who are hesitant about the faith. 10/10
