Q: Will this work in NYC cold weather?

It should with a bit of tweaking. I live in Denver which is USDA Zone 5 so we do experience occasional subzero weather. My greenhouse is over a raised-bed filled with mulch & is on the north side of my garage. I placed 2 king sized cotton sheets over the frame then put on the plastic covering. It was then covered with a tarp. Last winter all but 3 of my 40+ bonsai survived.

Q: Are the sections of pipe along the length of the top, and along the length of the sides and bottom separate short pieces, or one long piece ? ( 9' )

I think I remember them being three pieces, each on top and sides. Since you ask in January, it's been a while since I've seen them, and only used them once last Spring. But they are definitely more than one long piece on top and sides or I wouldn't have bought them. That would make them too weak. I am actually quite pleased with this purchase. Hope this helps!

There is a little bit of flexibility in the connectors. If needed you can gain a bit of extra size, then tighten down to fit
