So the biggest question on any AMC 20 axle is do you go to one piece or stay with your factory two piece. Online it's a constant barrage of people saying to go to the one piece axles. As you really look into it and look at the design. You are looking at bearing retainers to hold your now "Stronger" one piece axle in the housing. Also you will have to shim the one pieces axles to obtain the appropriate axle preload. This didn't sit too well with me. I have an 1981 CJ5 with a mildly improved 304. Let me tell you this jeep is like driving a drag car off road. I only went down the axle replacement road, due to adding a rear locker and leaking seals. After all the research I determined that the rear axles are 33 years old and I have had no problems with them at all. Upon taking them apart to replace the bearings and seals I bent the outer Hub portion on the axles. This is what led me to purchase the new hub assembly.The quality of all of these parts is excellent. The Bearing and seals are the exact same Timken's that I purchased from the auto store.The hubs installed quite easy, once I purchased a new 3/4" drive socket wrench from the store. Let me tell you 1/2" drive will not cut it, you will only break your tool. Also the most important advice I found on these was forget the torque spec it is irrelevant when installing the new hub to your inner axle. This Hub will need to installed to a specific depth. 1 5/16 inch from the hub to the end of the inner axle.I believe when installed properly, these hubs should last another 30 years.Enjoy your rebuild.
