The classic story of literature’s most beloved elephant. After his mother is killed by a hunter, Babar avoids capture by escaping to the city, where he is befriended by the kindly Old Lady. Later, with cousins Celeste and Arthur, he returns to the great forest to be crowned King of the Elephants. With the original illustrations from Jean de Brunhoff's 1931 classic, this first Babar story has enchanted generations. Review: Beautiful Babar Book - Babar book arrived in perfect condition .It was a joy to give as a gift and did justice to the beauty of Babar's story. Highly recommend! Babar the elephant
I love this book to which I was introduced to as a small child. I plan to give it to my little student that I mentor for reading. Hopefully, she will be as enchanted by it as I was as a child. She seems to be an excellent student.

A classic book, but apparently too much for coddling parents
This book holds my fondest memories of my childhood, a childhood that was in some ways harder than Babar's. The idea that from the loss of a parent, I could still grow up and be king was something that that gave me confidence and hope. It made me want to learn and to teach others, and it helped me know that life isn't always easy and pretty, but you have to make the most of what you are dealt. I would recommend this book for every child, but especially for those that have lost something dear to them and could use a little help imagining what is possible. The low reviews for this book are all absurd, they are great examples of how poorly we treat our kids and how little we think of them as individuals. These people think they need to hide the world from their children rather than let them see and explore it for themselves. If you feel guilty sharing this book with your kids because you can't deal with reality, then you should really reconsider breading. The world will be a better place for your restraint.

Childhood fave without the cursive. Grumble
Love this book (and its many, many sequels) as a kid. This was fun to read, though I was disappointed it wasn’t printed in cursive. A good 50% of why I ordered it was to see if I could read it these days. 7 years old me struggled with the cursive in the 70s version from the public library! Also, I don’t remember the colonialism from back in grade 2. I mean obviously it was there; but damn. You know?

Wonderfully and engagingly written
This is the "Bambi" of children's books. Wonderfully and engagingly written, w fantastic illustrations, this is the book that kicked off the wonderful Babar series. But- but- but! Like "Bambi"... notice how that's never on TV, ever? The one jarring moment is in the first few pages when a hunter SHOOTS AND KILLS Barbar's mother. You could argue that it's part of the reason the book is so powerful- Babar discovers his independence! - but it is jarring for modern readers, and can be difficult for sensitive children. I loved the book as a child, and I have read it to my son many times... but he had a tough time the first read we did together.

The Kids Loved It!
Book arrived in a timely fashion and in great condition for a used book. Kids in 2 pre-school classes (2-3 yr olds and 5-6 yr olds) both enjoyed hearing the story of Babar, although some of the older children were very upset to hear that Babar's mommy, was shot and killed by a hunter....so that needs careful attention if you are reading the story to little ones. It was omitted in a reading for the very young ones, and explained with considerable care to the older ones. A good way to help children understand the plight of elephants today. All in all a great success!

Weird book in retrospect
I bought this because my mom read it to me when I was very young. I didn't understand what she was reading at the time and now, after reading it, I understand why I didn't. It's weird in my adult opinion but I like the pictures. I believe the pictures are what I liked as a very little kid. Personally I wouldn't be inclined to read it to a young child because of the deaths especially of the mother. I wouldn't read Grimm's Fairy tales to a kid either for that matter.

Sempre bello
Il libro è arrivato puntualmente e in buono stato. Non ha propriamente la forma di un libro ma piu' di un quaderno leggero e dalle dimensioni A4. Sono soddisfatta

A great Classic
As I was and my kids were, my grandson is obsessed with The Story of Babar. It has some dark moments, bringing many questions from our 3 year old. A classic to be enjoyed by all.

Cute
I wasn’t expecting to have to deal with death in a children’s story, but it’s a sweet story and my child enjoyed it.
