From its contents, this is simply the best available book for learning Amharic. The texts and the vocabulary are useful. The grammatic is explained in a detailed, but easy-to-understand way.One drawback is the quality of the book binding, which is not strong enough for a book of such a size and a book, which is used very heavily, like a language-learning-book.,

Very good! Although it is not written by a native speaker, it is very informative on the process of understanding how to write the syllabary of Amharic. I consider it a good start for learning.

This did not match the on line pronunciation guide. Very frustrated and trying to resolve the problem.

This is the only book out there that really explains Amharic writing, vocabulary and grammar in a didactic manner. It is for the serious learner. If you are extremely serious, you might want to complement it with Wolf Leslau's "Introductory Grammar of Amharic".

Very well organized. Makes a logical study plan for a language not often studied in English speaking countries. Really enjoying this book, and I believe I will benefit from studying before I get to Ethiopia.

This is aimed at serious students of Amharic, particularly for people from an English background. It is the key resource for serious students of learning Amharic language.The book has has been published since 1995 and is highly recommended and used by many universities including the SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) at the University of London and by our own tutors at Learn Amharic UK. Appleyard says this new, revised second edition (published 2013, simultaneously in UK, USA and Canada by Routledge) incorporates many comments from students, teachers and reviewers.This is for someone who wants to get quite far with speaking modern Amharic and to master the ancient Ge'ez script and some grammar early on in the units. Each unit has dialogues and texts, introducing new grammar, words and contexts, such as being at school, writing a letter, going shopping, and finishes with magazine articles. It's very interactive, and readers should work their way through the exercises and make sure they understand before moving forward. There is also an audio CD, which is a separate purchase.The author explains: "By the end of this course you should be able to carry on a reasonable conversation on most everyday topics, express yourself in writing and read simple Amharic." We highly recommend this thorough and enlightening book to our students who want to learn Amharic in London although we do not require it. Amharic is a rich and beautiful language with many nuances and layers of meaning, and this book will help you appreciate it more.

For 1st year university students I suspect it would be good. For someone wanting to converse rather than write and decline verbs it is too complicated. The Amharic script is printed in a very small font and extremely difficult to read - for a learner at least. I found the approach very complicated and there is little evidence of an appreciation of the way language teaching has developed in recent times. in comparison with the approach of Michel Thomas to language teaching this book seems to be teacher centred rather than learner centric. But if you like grammar and declining verbs this is the book for you.
