I use it with a 3 lb. 18 inch sledge hammer standing up against an up right using a bungee to hold it in place. With four to twelve solid hits large pieces of seasoned hardwood are split with ease.

I’ve usually tried to split logs with a steel wedge - with mixed success, some being too large.This tool is a pleasure to work with. Easily penetrates the log and thus stays in place. Splits most logs with 3-4 blows.Yes, the red paint soon comes off - but who cares?A great tool, but most splits are only two-way, not four as suggested. It would defy physics and wood grain to consistently make four way splits.Would buy again.

Three taps with an 8 pound sledge and this oak popped open! My last wood grenade snapped at the tip while splitting White Oak, but it lasted 5 years.

I broke my 25-year-old long-lived Grenade splitting wedge yesterday on a gnarly piece of black locust. Bummer. Found this one as a replacement. Seems well made. Strong. Heavy. Much like my beloved Grenade wedge. Don't know if it will last, but railroad quality steel ought to be tough and long-lasting. We will see. Good price so I gave it a try and hope for the best. Hard to replace a wedge that split hundreds of cords of wood without failure. But I am hopeful this will be a good one.
