This thing works great. I was a bit uncertain given some folks' varying accounts, but I figured my ice is just used at home so no need to be perfect. Turns out they come out perfect anyway! I followed someone else's suggestion and used filtered water from my fridge but let it warm to room temp before putting into the ice form. It takes about a gallon to fill it up. I set in my freezer (I only have a freezer drawer, so I tried to be careful, and after closing it I didn't open it again until a full 36 hours had passed) and 36 hours later, voila! It took me a bit to figure out the best way to get them out, but I followed the little instruction booklet and sure enough, completely clear 2" ice! The only "flaw" is the little nubbin left from the hole in the bottom of each square (which is what makes the whole thing work).Funnily enough it's actually hard to take a picture of how clear they are because of condensation and surface crystals, but a cube absolutely disappears into an old fashioned.The silicone might tear if you yank on it too hard when extracting the cubes, but if you have patience and treat it gently I'd say this thing will last for a long time.

My tips for using this product to produce crystal clear ice cubes. See pictures. It is completely clear, but it has a nubbly texture on the bottom that disappears completely when in your cocktail.1. Put it in the “warmest” part of your freezer. Our upright fridge has a space with no cooling coils on the bottom. Temp is still plenty cold to freeze water from cold air coming from above.2. Take it out after 24 hours and check it. You shouldn’t have to freeze the entire bottom part of the inner tray. See picture with unfrozen water in the bottom.3. Don’t throw away the ice in the bottom tray. Crush it up and use to mix your cocktails.

The package came well packaged. This product contains 6 pieces. A styrofoam box, a silicone mold (in the shape of the box, a silicone tray and another silicone ice mold and cover and finally a storage bag. It came with no printed instructions. However, it didn’t come with directions on the side.I fitted the pieces together as they should be, then filled with hot water from the tap. You could use cold but I prefer hot water. The directions states: freeze for 48 to 50 hours.After about 2 days I pulled it out of the freezer and was at a stand still. How the heck was I supposed to get the cubes out of the mold? Too easy. I was able to easily remove the block from the styrofoam box easily. I then took my meat tenderizer and tapped on the silicone block until I was able to slightly bend and twist the ice mold and able to separate it from the silicone box.My old fashions look classy and professionally made. I’m going to keep it cause I’ve been making 8 cubes at a time and storing them in zip lock bags. I’m giving it 4 stars cause they didn’t send instructions on how to remove the cubes.

This works! This set up really does make clear ice! If you follow the directions, AND use store bought spring water. The ice left in the bottom was easy to remove and broke up into four large ice cubes that I used in my large stainless steel cups! Bonus! Now the ice leftover is not clear, but who cares? It is big ice that is inside of a big stainless steel cup.

The square ice came out fine. Of the 8 cubes, 4 were completely clear. For the ones that were not clear, it might have had to do with the lid in contact with the water, shearing, and bubbles, and I'll try to avoid such things on the next round. I used (bottled) spring water (from Trader Joe's) that I boiled only once. Make sure you have space in your freezer. I placed the unit at the very back of the freezer. After the process, I placed the 8 cubes in individual, small Ziploc bags. If you store them all in a single Ziploc, they'll freeze together. The cubes are much too large for your ordinary drinking glass. If you have a wide mouth glass (I use a mug for ice tea), it's fine. I don't drink alcohol so I'll never know how well they'll fit into a bourbon or whiskey glass. Since it makes only 8 cubes over 30-36 hrs, you'll have to plan ahead for a large party. I like the look of clear ice so it was a fun science project. The very simple instructions include the science on how the ice remains clear.
