In a day when beef is assailed by many environmental organizations and lauded by fast-food chains, a new paradigm to bring reason to this confusion is in order. With farmers leaving the land in droves and plows poised to "reclaim" set-aside acres, it is time to offer an alternative that is both land and farmer friendly. Beyond that, the salad bar beef production model offers hope to rural communities, to struggling row-crop farmers, and to frustrated beef eaters who do not want to encourage desertification, air and water pollution, environmental degradation and inhumane animal treatment. Because this is a program weighted toward creativity, management, entrepreneurism and observation, it breathes fresh air into farm economics. Review: An excellent and green concept - I recommend Salad Bar Beef to anyone in the country that wants to produce beef worth eating. Salatin is extremely open and honest about everything he does on his farm, and is very passionate about green farming. This book does not contain simple homesteading information; it is a manual on how to maximize profits, production, and soil fertility, while decreasing disease and stress(both cattle stress and farmer stress). When I said it does not contain "simple homesteading information", I did not mean that this book is complicated. Salad Bar Beef is actually one of the easiest agricultural books to comprehend. Although easy to comprehend, you can not by any means read this book with a conventional mind. Pretend you do not know anything, and carefully consider Salatin's points. If you begin reading this book and get the feeling that Salatin is strong in the way he presents his points, that's because he is. Many do not like being convicted, but the truth is, if you're never convicted, you never learn. Salatin makes his views clearly seen in his books, and every one of them are good and practical. Personally, I do not like reading a book in which the author is weak in his presentation of views. I have never read agricultural books as good as the ones that Salatin has written, and I recommend them to anyone interested in farming naturally. The books are high-priced, but worth double that. Before long I will raise poultry and cattle using Salatin's methods, using Salad Bar Beef as a manual. Too bad I can't give Salad Bar Beef six or seven stars. Review: Outstanding Book with Great Information and Ideas - I had read numerous grass-fed beef and rotational grazing books before I bought this one. The reason I did is because almost all of those books referenced this one. I figured if books I liked were referencing this book it must be a good one, and it is. There is great information on grazing, finishing, marketing, and general farm business in this book. Although at times the author gets on a political, legal, or environmental soap box, the good information in this book more than makes up for it. The author is a farmer that makes his living direct-marketing products from his farm, so you know this information is quality stuff. Reading this book also prompted me to buy this author's book Pastured Poultry Profits, which is also a great book if you are interested in pastured poultry. If you are interested in another good book on grass-fed beef, I highly recommend Grass-Fed Beef by Julius Ruechel.

amazing book
This is a great book for any fledgling or experienced farmer wanting to produce quality beef. Joelโs tried and true methods of raising beef on 100% pasture, using intensive grazing methods are truly amazing. Please do not listen to the 1 and 2 star ratings from people whoโve never farmed or understand what heโs doing and get bent outa shape and their feelings hurt because Joel is strait forward and tells it like it is. Facts are facts people. If you canโt handle it, tough. If youโre gonna turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to the current food situation, if you want to stubbornly listen to the food police ( usda ) and Tyson and the industrial agriculturalists agenda, then do so, at the cost of your health and that of your family. End of story.

So far I love it!!
I havenโt read it all but so far Iโm very happy. Actually been having a hard time setting it down. Several natural remedies in which I have already started to implement. Itโs too early to know if they work but most natural remedies take longer to see the effects. Definitely will be recommending this book to others.

Great book
Joel gives great advice and life experiences. I would recommend this book to anyone. If you want to know how your beef is raised vs how it should be raised.

Awesome introductory book for wannabe grass farmers
I have read many of Joel Salatin's books and this one is different in its poignancy and direction. He wrote this before he became a media icon and was still trying to inspire people to take on a mindset akin to his own. He goes to great lengths to apologize and redeem himself for his interjected points of view and preachy political nature, but those sections are also the most entertaining and break up the seriousness with which he is writing. Not for someone interested in how cowboys spend their time. More a treatise of the things that a cow-farmer should be aware of before he puts his cows out to pasture. Many people have complained that this book is not for beginning grass farmers but I disagree because we would all like to have a father/uncle/grandpa like Joel Salatin to warn you right before you make a mistake; this book will prevent you from making many mistakes.

Motivational farming business manual!
More than a book about farming, this is excellent reading about a family refusing to throw the towel on their farming in business and its breakthrough towards new and better ways of farming.
