Do you need special headphones?

No. Any headphones with a 6 mm jack plug should be fine. You may also use 'Phones with a 3.5 mm plug if you have the appropriate 6 mm to 3.5 mm adaptor.

What is the maximum length it can be adjusted to?

Didn't know the answer to this myself but it's not adjustable. Taller you are the more vertical you hold it, shorter, the flatter you hold it. Head swivels to suit.

Would this be suitable for a six year old boy - would it be too big for him to hold and use?

not suitable for your son too big.
