Q: Is the protractor helpful for a woodworker building furniture? The set is rather expensive and I would like to be sure I will get value out of it...

Yes, I use the set exclusively for woodworking, and both the protractor and centering tool had been very useful. In the long run you will find the set to be a huge value. It might seem a bit steep of a cost at time of purchase, but worth every penny. And if cared for will last a lifetime with no issue. I never think about the cost of this set of tools - I'm just glad I have them.

Q: Does reversible lock bolts mean the adjustment screw stays in place when removed from the ruler?

No, not really. It does stay in place, yes, but it's reversible in another way. The "blade", which is the ruler, has a machined groove on only one side. The locking bolt's internal mechanism engages with the groove. Since the measuring scales on the blade are different left to right and top to bottom, there are four different possible scales to use. With the locking bolt in its "normal" position, you can access two of the these by turning the blade around and reinserting it, but keeping the groove on the same side. To use the other two scales, you need the groove on the blade to be on the opposite side. To do this, you pull the locking bolt, rotate it 180 degrees, and let go. Now the part of the mechanism that engages the blade groove is on the other side, and you can insert the blade with the other two scales facing you and choose the one you want by inserting the blade appropriately.

Q: Does this have a satin chrome finish?

The body is crinkle black, the ruler is satin stainless steel.
