Works well

not always straight forward & needs a great deal of understanding of network connection

setting this needs a little black magic. just when you think you have failed it suddenly comes to life. I haven't so far fount an easy way to confirm it is working properly or not.

Price doesn't guarantee service

Just as problematic as cheaper options with frequent reboots required and connection problems.

Great coverage

Easy to set up & works brilliantly

Do Not Buy. Look for a different brand.

Can not recommend this product and lack of support from Netgear.Product used to extend stronger Wi-fi across house for work. Gaming consoles and home entertainment connected directly to router (Virgin Media Hub 3.0) via Ethernet connect. The extender would be for mobile devices and work laptops. Two laptops, two tablets, three phones, soundbar and an echo dot.Whilst the Wi-fi strength and speed is excellent when it works, the extender constantly drops internet connection to the router. This will require disabling the connected devices Wi-fi and re enabling or power cycling the extender itself. Devices connected to the router directly through Wi-fi maintained the Wi-fi connection.Multiple tests have shown that the issue is not with the router but the EX8000 itself as the drop only affects devices connected to the Wi-fi network via the extender. Note, Ethernet connections to the EX8000 also drop.Netgear forum is littered with threads dating back over two years requesting help or a fix for this common issue with the EX8000. It seems their support will respond with (eventually if they do respond at all) the specific device must be faulty and a replacement should be acquired. No known fix for a persistent issue dating two years... That in itself is worrying.I have setup my replacement EX8000 hoping the first device was just faulty but it seems fairly clear that it is the model itself at fault. The EX8000 just appears to disconnect randomly throughout the day. I have monitored what is accessing the device and it will disconnect when there have been no change in number of devices, types of devices or activities on any of the devices. It is also almost random as to which devices will drop a connection connected to the netgear nighthawk.I have had my iPad disconnect whilst my android phone and other apple products remained connected. My work laptop remained in a conference call when my partner’s call was disconnected. I have had all devices maintain connection bar one. I have had all devices drop connection. Pick a scenario, it has happened. Not great for a smart home or if you rely on a connection for security devices.I also note, it appears to have issues (although support have claimed it should not) with the use of VPN. I have never had issues with my VPN until attempting to connect to the EX8000.Overall, it has a sleek design and is capable of producing fast Wi-fi but is let down by the fact it cannot maintain the connection. Somewhat of a flaw in a product that is meant to improve your home network capabilities.Final note, Netgear’s support will help you whilst you have your small warranty. Afterwards, you must pay for the privilege of them telling you the device is faulty or hope that someone with warranty posts in the forum and actually gets a response.

LAN FTP test

LAN FTP speed test. PC ----wired----> router(R8000) (((Wi-Fi))) extender <----wired---- PC(should be 100MB/s when both PCs are wired to the same switch)1) 4m apart in same roomFTP: constant 60MB/sInternet 85 Mbps2) 4m away through one 7 cm thick plaster wall and one 100 cm thick brick wallFTP: fluctuating 35-55MB/sInternet 73 MbpsOverall, I’m very pleased with the performance. It’s used for transferring files and streaming from a media server. There is a user-friendly and an advanced (not very) setup mode. This is much better than their best powerline adapter PLP2000, which lose 25% in the same power strip, and another 25% in a second power point in the same room.Knocked off a star due to a bit of false advertising as it’s not tri band in extender mode, only dual band (2.4&5GHz), but you can use all 3 radios in a wired setup where the ex8000 serves as an access point.
